Sleep Apnea

Here at Hammond Family Dental, we work hard to help our patients who have sleep apnea. People who have sleep apnea never get the rest that they deserve. They have trouble breathing which constantly wakes them up throughout the night. Many people who have sleep apnea have multiple health problems. They are always exhausted. Being tired can affect people at home and at work. They may be miserable and have trouble concentrating. Sleep apnea can also affect their blood pressure, making them more likely to have strokes. There is a big risk with anesthesia since they have trouble breathing.

There are some devices that can be helpful with sleep apnea. They help patients by keeping their airways open at night. There is also a procedure that can be performed if you have extra tissue in your throat. It reshapes your throat so that you can breathe much better.

Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding, or bruxism, is a condition that affects around 10% of the population chronically, although many more experience this condition occasionally.

It is particularly prevalent while sleeping and some may not even know they grind their teeth unless they develop secondary symptoms such as jaw pain, damage to their teeth, or headaches.

Generally, tooth grinding is influenced by factors such as anxiety, tension, stress, sleep disorders, certain medications, alcohol, and tobacco usage, but it is possible to also experience chronic tooth grinding with no discernible cause.

There is no known “cure” for tooth grinding, only ways to address and treat the symptoms. One remedy that we are proud to offer for teeth grinding at Hammond Family Dental is hypnosis.

Hypnosis is a clinically proven treatment method for tooth grinding and is an effective treatment option because it targets the unconscious. For many, teeth grinding is an unconscious behavior, but that does not mean it cannot be controlled. During hypnosis, we will place you in a deep state of relaxation where your mind becomes more receptive to the power of suggestion. Under hypnosis, you will be taught techniques to manage teeth grinding, which has proven to effectively reduce and in some cases entirely eliminate the unwanted behavior.
